THE DIGEST
Pasadena Moves Toward Legal Home Kitchens
This one took way longer than I think it needed to but Pasadena is finally one step closer to legalizing home-based food businesses!
Councilmember Tyron Hampton announced that “micro home kitchens,” which allow residents to cook and sell food from their own homes, have been approved by the city’s Economic Development and Technology Committee. The proposal would create a pilot program giving home cooks a legal path to operate as long as they meet health and safety requirements.
In 2019, California established the Microenterprise Home Kitchen Operation (MEHKO) under the Health and Safety Code, allowing small-scale home restaurants to operate legally. Pasadena has been slower to adopt the model, but this move brings the city closer to joining others that already allow it.
The measure now heads to the full Pasadena City Council for final approval.
Kaiser Med School Achieves Perfect Match Day
Big congratulations to the Class of 2026 at Pasadena’s Kaiser Permanente Bernard J. Tyson School of Medicine, who achieved a perfect residency match rate for the third year in a row!
Every third Friday in March is Match Day — the moment newly graduated doctors find out where they’ll begin their hands-on residency training in their chosen specialties, and this year, every KPSOM graduate secured a placement.
More than half will stay in California at programs like UC Irvine Medical Center and Kaiser Permanente Los Angeles, while others matched at top institutions nationwide, including Mount Sinai and Brigham and Women’s Hospital. The most common specialties included Internal Medicine, Psychiatry, and Emergency Medicine, with over a third entering primary care.
For a school that opened just a few years ago, it’s an impressive streak and a strong sign of the impact these new physicians are about to make.
