Hovsepyan Family Optometry is a Pasadena optometrist practice led by Dr. Jivan Hovsepyan. Dr. Hovsepyan was raised in Pasadena and attended Webster Middle School and Marshall High School. After completing his education and clinical training, he returned to Pasadena to open the practice on East Colorado Boulevard.

The practice is built around something that can sometimes feel surprisingly hard to find in healthcare: enough time with the doctor. Hovsepyan Family Optometry says its goal is to make sure patients do not feel rushed or treated like a number, with an emphasis on listening to concerns, explaining what is going on and tailoring treatment to the individual patient.

My Visit

I stopped by Hovsepyan Family Optometry for an eye exam and had a really good experience with Dr. Jivan Hovsepyan and his staff. He walked me through the entire exam, explained what he was checking along the way and was very clear about what I actually needed. He was friendly, easy to talk to and made the appointment feel comfortable rather than clinical or rushed.

The staff was just as welcoming, and I also really liked the office itself. It feels new, modern and very clean, with a green color theme throughout that gives the space a warm, polished look.

What stood out most to me was how personal the visit felt. Jivan took the time to explain things instead of simply giving me a prescription and sending me on my way. That matched pretty closely with how the practice describes its approach to patient care.

The Doctor Behind the Practice

Dr. Hovsepyan was born in Gyumri, Armenia, and grew up in Pasadena. He earned his bachelor’s degree in neuroscience from UC Riverside before earning both a Doctor of Optometry and a Master of Science from the Southern California College of Optometry. His master’s research focused on stereopsis, or 3D vision, and how the two eyes work together.

His clinical training included Walter Reed Military Medical Center, where he worked with active-duty military patients with vision issues related to traumatic brain injuries, and Four Corners Regional Health Center in the Navajo Nation, where he treated patients with conditions including glaucoma and cataracts.

His connection to Pasadena extends beyond the office. Hovsepyan currently serves as vice president of the Pasadena Host Lions Club and says he has participated in more than 50 free clinics and contributed more than 500 volunteer hours. He also helps oversee donated eyeglasses and programs serving underserved communities in Pasadena. The practice serves patients in English, Spanish, and Armenian.
