THE DIGEST
Where to Book Valentine’s Day Dinner in Pasadena
Pasadena does Valentine’s Day really well — the kind of night where the lighting is right, the menus are special, and the whole city feels a little more romantic than usual.
I put together a quick guide to Valentine’s Day dinner spots in Pasadena, including prix fixe menus and standout restaurants like The Raymond 1886, The Arbour, The Terrace at The Langham, Sushi Enya, True Food Kitchen, Star Leaf and many more!
If you’re planning to go out on Friday, February 14, it’s worth booking now. The best reservation times tend to disappear first. I know it’s pretty late and Valentine’s Day is in three days, but you still have time! There are plenty of reservations still available.

CIVIC NEWS
City Seeks Input on Landscaping for First Battery Storage Facility
Before construction begins on Pasadena’s first utility-scale battery storage project, the city is asking neighbors what it should look like from the outside.
Pasadena Water and Power will host a public meeting tonight, Wednesday at 6PM at the Allendale Branch Library, 1130 South Marengo Ave, to gather input on landscaping, plant selection, and visual buffering for the new 25-megawatt battery energy storage system planned at the Glenarm Power Plant site.
The project, backed by a $9.66 million state grant, is part of Pasadena’s push to reach 100% carbon-free electricity by 2030. The battery system will store excess solar energy and release it during peak demand to improve grid reliability.
City officials say the meeting will focus strictly on aesthetic elements along Glenarm Street and Raymond Avenue, not the broader battery project itself. The facility is expected to be operational by 2027.

How to Actually Get a Valentine’s Day Reservation (Without Begging)
by Peter Dills, Local Food Dude ([email protected])
Listen to the ‘Peter Dills AKA LA Foodie’ podcast here or SoundCloud here.
Let’s get one thing straight: I’m not telling you where to go for Valentine’s Day. That’s on you. But I will tell you how to actually get the reservation you want — without losing your dignity or your deposit.
First rule: don’t be a jerk.
Calling five restaurants and booking three “just in case” isn’t strategy — it’s selfish. Restaurants aren’t airlines. They staff up, order product, and turn away real customers based on those reservations. And yes, they can hold your credit card if they so desire. Increasingly, they do. You no-show? You pay. As you should.
Now that we’ve handled basic manners, let’s move on to tactics.
Old-school move: go to the restaurant in person.
It works. You’ll likely skip the phone queue, and you’ll get someone’s full attention instead of competing with 20 other callers at 5 p.m. If you’re a regular, even better. Eye contact beats hold music every time.
Use the systems wisely.
Many booking platforms have partnerships where restaurants allocate a certain number of tables specifically for online reservations. That means the hostess telling you “we’re fully booked” might not be the whole story. Check the apps. Check them again. Tables pop up when cancellations happen.
And don’t underestimate your credit card. Premium cards — American Express, for example — often have dining concierge services or reserved inventory. I’ve had tremendous luck booking through them. Sometimes it’s about who you know. Sometimes it’s about who processes your payment.
Timing says something about you, by the way.
5:30 p.m.? You’re practical.
7:00 p.m.? Prime time romantic.
9:15 p.m.? Either spontaneous… or you procrastinated.
Last tip — and this is between us — generosity goes a long way. I’ve been known to leave a $20 advance tip when securing a hard-to-get reservation. Not a bribe. A gesture. Hospitality people remember kindness. Especially on Valentine’s Day.
Bottom line: plan ahead, don’t overbook, respect the restaurant, and use every tool available.
And if you still can’t get in? There’s always champagne at home.
Happy Valentine’s Day.
