THE DIGEST
Caltech Camera Helps Spot Rare Interstellar Comet
A new comet, named 3I/ATLAS, is zooming through our solar system from deep interstellar space—and Caltech’s Zwicky Transient Facility (ZTF) helped confirm it. Discovered July 1 by a NASA-funded telescope in Chile, early images from Caltech’s robotic survey camera refined its orbit and revealed it’s not from around here. It’s only the third known interstellar object ever detected. No threat to Earth—just a rare cosmic visitor passing through.
