THE DIGEST
Doo Dah Refuses to Die
For nearly five decades, Pasadena’s Doo Dah Parade has been the city’s joyful rebellion against all things prim and proper. While the Rose Parade rolls with themes, judges, and flower-covered floats, Doo Dah gave us the Synchronized Nap Team, tortilla fights, and anyone bold enough to show up in costume.
This year, the wildfires and financial fallout hit hard, and for the first time in memory, the parade itself was canceled. For a minute, it looked like Pasadena’s strangest, most beloved tradition might actually fade out.
But Doo Dah was never about neat rows of roses or polished pageantry—it was born from resistance. So instead of retreating, the community is throwing The Doo Dah Takeover on Sunday, Nov. 23.
Here’s the plan:
-
Doo Dah’s Big Bang! (11AM–3PM at Dog Haus Biergarten on Big Bang Theory Way)
Expect cabaret chaos in an alley, live music from MA the Band and The Rock and Roll Preservation Society, and the irreverent tradition of crowning the Doo Dah Queen—chosen for wit, originality, or sheer audacity. -
After Party @ The Old Towne Pub (3–7PM, 21+)
Ashton Slater’s Grateful Get-Down takes over with trippy jams and who-knows-what else.
Both events are free. More details here.
So yes, the parade may be on pause—but Doo Dah refuses to be cancelled. It will morph, mutate, and resurrect itself however it needs to. That’s the whole point.
Walking + October + Pasadena = Walktober!
It’s that time again—Walktober is back for its 8th year in Pasadena! The City, Day One, and the Pasadena Complete Streets Coalition are teaming up all month long to get us out of our cars and onto our feet with free, guided walks and tours. Think of it as a walking festival for your body, your brain, and your neighborhood connections.
Whether you’re in it for fitness, fresh air, history, or just an excuse to wander with friends, Walktober has you covered. A few highlights:
-
Sat, Oct. 4 – Bird walk + sit at the Gamble House (8AM) and a Lamanda Park history walk with Councilmember Gene Masuda (11AM)
-
Sun, Oct. 5 – Public art + architecture tour (9AM) and a peek at Route 66’s classic car scene (5PM)
-
Sat, Oct. 11 – A whole lineup: Arroyo Terrace walk, a neighborhood discovery tour with Vice Mayor Jess Rivas, plus a two-library tour.
-
Sun, Oct. 19 – Walk the history of Arroyo activism (9AM) and explore Old Pasadena’s hidden secrets (5PM).
-
Sat, Oct. 25 – Playhouse Village tour (10AM) and a Caltech modern campus walk with Councilmember Jason Lyon (1PM).
-
Sun, Oct. 26 – Stroll the Wilson Avenue Greenway (9AM) or check out the Eaton Wash Stormwater Garden (3PM).
And that’s just a slice of the calendar.
The idea is simple: walking brings joy, connection, and discovery. You might see Pasadena’s history in a new light, find a neighborhood you’ve never explored, or meet a fellow walker who becomes a new friend.
