THE DIGEST
Music for the Ocean at Boston Court Pasadena
I went to a fundraiser concert at Boston Court Pasadena on Saturday, and it ended up being a really unique, memorable experience.
Music for the Ocean is a live performance by composer and violinist (and my Rose Bowl swim teammate) Chad Cannon alongside pianist Hui Wu. The show blends live music with animation and sound design to create a fully immersive experience.
As Chad plays violin and Hui accompanies on piano, the room fills with synchronized animations of marine life — from clownfish to bluefin tuna, bioluminescent organisms, and white-spotted pufferfish-inspired visuals. Each piece is tied to a different sea creature, many of which Chad had encountered while scuba diving off the coast of Honduras.
The visuals move with the music, and the ambient lighting shifts with each composition. It genuinely adds more dimensions to the music, making each piece feel more alive and intentional.

But there’s a deeper purpose behind it.
This performance is connected to what’s happening in our oceans right now. Over the past couple of years, large portions of coral reefs in places like the Florida Coast and the Caribbean have died off due to rising ocean temperatures. When coral reefs bleach, they lose the algae that keep them alive, and entire ecosystems start to collapse. The reefs don’t just disappear — the fish and marine life that depend on them go with them.
The performance is part of a larger effort to raise $100,000 for Tela Coral, a nonprofit focused on protecting a rare, resilient reef system in Tela, Honduras. They’re working to build a coral biobank and the region’s first marine lab, preserving the genetics of corals that have survived recent mass bleaching events across the Caribbean. It’s a way to protect and study species that could play a key role in future reef restoration. After the show, a conversation with a USC coral geneticist and Tela Coral’s co-founder helped connect the experience back to the science and the real work being done.
