Inside Castle Green: Pasadena’s Historic Gem Opens for Tour https://www.newsnroses.com/castle-green-pasadena-history-and-tours/ Mon, 07 Apr 2025 23:03:31 +0000 https://www.newsnroses.com/?p=7814

Ever walked past Castle Green and wondered what’s inside? Here’s your chance to find out—and learn the story behind one of Pasadena’s most iconic buildings.

Castle Green Pasadena history and tours go far beyond the walls of this architectural gem. With its domes, wrought-iron balconies, and Moorish arches, Castle Green is more than just a photo-worthy landmark—it’s a piece of living history. Built in 1898, the building was once part of a luxury hotel that drew wealthy winter travelers to Southern California. Today, it still captures the imagination with every ornate tile and carved stair railing.

Castle Green

The History of Castle Green

Rising above Old Pasadena with its iconic domes, wrought-iron balconies, and Moorish-inspired arches, Castle Green isn’t just a beautiful building—it’s a rare, living time capsule from the turn of the 20th century. Its distinctive architecture and storied past have made it one of Pasadena’s most recognizable landmarks, drawing photographers, historians, filmmakers, and curious passersby alike.

Set in the middle of modern-day Pasadena, Castle Green is a reminder of the city’s early days as a luxury winter getaway. Back in the late 1800s, Pasadena was booming, and this building captured that energy with every stained glass window, tiled hallway, and carved staircase. More than 125 years later, it still gives you a glimpse of what life was like during Southern California’s golden resort era.

Born from a Boom: The Hotel Green Legacy

Castle Green began as the Central Annex to the legendary Hotel Green, a luxury resort built by Colonel George Gill Green in 1888. Colonel Green, a Civil War veteran and patent medicine tycoon, wanted to create a winter retreat for wealthy East Coasters looking for California sunshine.

In response to the area’s booming popularity, he commissioned renowned architect Frederick Roehrig to design a second, more extravagant wing. Completed in 1898, the Castle Green annex featured cutting-edge amenities for the time—electric lights, steam heat, an elevator, and lavish architectural details.

The new annex was connected to the original hotel by a bridge over Raymond Avenue, and quickly became a crown jewel of Pasadena’s resort scene.

From Hotel to Historic Landmark

As the golden age of luxury resorts faded, Castle Green transitioned into private apartments in 1924. Since then, it has housed generations of artists, writers, and local legends—earning it a reputation as one of the most unique residences in Southern California.

Castle Green narrowly avoided demolition in the 1970s thanks to community advocacy. In 1993, the Friends of Castle Green formed to preserve and restore the building to the standards of the Secretary of the Interior for historic preservation. Their efforts continue today.

A Look Inside Castle Green

Castle Green opens its doors just twice a year—once in summer and again during the holidays—for a rare look inside this one-of-a-kind building. The tours are organized by the Friends of Castle Green, a nonprofit founded in 1993 to support historic restoration and share the building’s cultural significance with the community. Their mission is to preserve Castle Green to the standards set by the Secretary of the Interior for Historic Preservation—and to let the public experience its magic firsthand.

During the Summer Open House, guests can explore beautifully restored spaces like:

  • The Moorish and Turkish Rooms, rich with detail and vibrant design

  • The Palm Court, once a gathering place for music and conversation

  • The Grand Salon, where elegant dances and socials were held

  • The Lobby and Grand Staircase, a striking architectural centerpiece

  • The Bridge, fully restored inside and out

  • Several private apartments, opened exclusively for the tour

You’ll also find a pop-up museum featuring rare archival materials—like casting molds of the building’s grotesques and decorative plasterwork used in its restoration. Throughout the day, historians and volunteers share insights into the Castle’s colorful past, while guests relax with lemonade on the veranda and enjoy live music on the lawn.

See It for Yourself

Whether you’re a local history buff, architecture enthusiast, or just curious about that mysterious castle-like building in Old Pasadena, the 2025 Castle Green Summer Tour is not to be missed. With its mix of historic charm, exclusive access, and community spirit, it’s a Pasadena experience you’ll talk about long after the lemonade runs out.

Castle Green isn’t just open for tours—it’s also available year-round as a stunning venue for weddings, private events, photo shoots, and film productions. Its unique architecture and timeless interiors have made it a favorite location for everything from magazine spreads to major motion pictures.

Tickets for the Summer Tour go on sale in late April at castlegreen.com—mark your calendar and don’t miss your chance to step inside.

Sushigah Pasadena: Korean-Japanese Fusion, Fresh Sushi, and Bulgogi https://www.newsnroses.com/sushigah-pasadena-korean-japanese-fusion-sushi-bulgogi/ Fri, 28 Mar 2025 23:24:34 +0000 https://www.newsnroses.com/?p=7680
Sushigah

Hidden in plain sight on Green Street, Sushigah is a local gem that delivers more than just delicious sushi—it offers a sense of home. Run by a Korean father and son duo, Sushigah blends the precision of Japanese sushi with the warmth and heartiness of Korean flavors. The name itself is a beautiful fusion: 家 (gah) means “house” or “family” in Korean, and that’s exactly what this place feels like.

From the moment you walk in, there’s a calm, welcoming feel to the place. The father and son who run it are always kind and attentive—it’s clear they care about what they do. As someone who comes here regularly, I can say that the consistency, the quality, and the way they treat their guests is what keeps people coming back. You don’t just get a great meal—you feel like you’re part of something they’ve put real heart into.

Sushigah Menu Highlights

Let’s talk about the food. Sushigah’s menu is a thoughtful blend of Japanese and Korean culinary traditions, offering a wide range of dishes for all kinds of tastes—from sushi and bulgogi to udon, ramen, and crispy tempura.

Sushi

Their sushi? Always spot-on. Each piece feels like it was just caught and sliced with care. The selection is both well-rounded and high quality—whether you’re in the mood for something classic like Yellowtail or Spicy Tuna, or going for bolder flavors like Freshwater Eel. The Yellowtail, in particular, is consistently clean, buttery, and melts in your mouth—the kind of quality that makes you slow down and really savor it.

Shushigah Gulgogi

Bulgogi

The standout for me—every single time—is their Bulgogi. It’s tender, flavorful, and has that perfect balance of sweet and garlicky. Cooked with onions and served sizzling hot, it’s probably the best Bulgogi I’ve ever had, hands down. It comes with a side of white rice and miso soup—the kind of miso that’s light, comforting, and just wholesome. Together, it’s a meal that always hits the spot.

Udon and Ramen

If you’re in the mood for something warm and comforting, Sushigah’s noodle soups are definitely worth a look. The Udon options are hearty and satisfying—the Tempura Udon comes with a generous mix of crisp tempura in a soy-based broth, while the Seafood Udon is loaded with assorted seafood and thick, chewy noodles that soak up all the flavor.

On the spicier side, the Classic Ramen brings the heat, and the Bulgogi Ramen takes things up a notch with tender marinated beef in a bold, spicy broth. There’s also a Seafood Ramen that’s just as fiery and flavorful, and a Veggie Ramen for a lighter, plant-based option. Whether you want something cozy and mild or rich and spicy, their noodle bowls are super satisfying and well-balanced.

Sushigah Udon

Beyond the Mains

Beyond the main dishes, Sushigah’s menu has plenty of great starters and drinks to round out your meal. Their appetizers include classics like edamame, garlic shishito peppers, and crispy mandoo (Korean dumplings). There are also a few light and refreshing salad options if you’re looking to start off clean.

If you’re in a sushi roll kind of mood, they’ve got a solid selection—from simple favorites like the Dragon Roll to more specialty rolls like the Truffle Delight and the Sushigah Roll. And to top it all off, they serve beer, sake, soju, and wine, so you can easily pair your meal with a drink (or two).

Visit Sushigah in Pasadena

Whether you’re stopping by for fresh sushi, a cozy bowl of ramen, or that unbeatable Bulgogi, Sushigah delivers every time. The food is consistent, flavorful, and made with care—and the warm, welcoming atmosphere makes it easy to see why this spot has become a Pasadena favorite.

You’ll find Sushigah at  63 S Raymond Ave, Pasadena, CA 91105, open:

  • Monday–Thursday: 11:00 AM – 9:30 PM

  • Friday–Saturday: 11:00 AM – 10:00 PM

  • Sunday: 11:00 AM – 9:00 PM

There’s usually street parking nearby, with a paid lot right around the corner too.

It’s a great place for a casual lunch, date night, or just a reliable go-to when you want something delicious and satisfying. Check out their full menu here—and if you haven’t been yet, you’re in for a treat.

Astronomy On Tap https://www.newsnroses.com/astronomy-on-tap/ Mon, 03 Feb 2025 02:29:15 +0000 https://www.newsnroses.com/?p=7038

Are you a space enthusiast? A fan of astronomy? Imagine being able to hear all about the wonders of the cosmos while enjoying a drink and a night out with friends and fellow space lovers! Look no further than Astronomy on Tap, a global phenomenon that brings informal science talks to local bars, creating an engaging and interactive experience for all who attend. Whether you’re deeply passionate about space or just curious about the universe, this event offers a unique opportunity to learn, socialize, and have fun in a laid-back atmosphere.

Rob Manning AoT

Astronomy on Tap Pasadena (Los Angeles)

In Los Angeles, Astronomy on Tap is organized by scientists from Caltech and takes place once a month on a Monday night at 7:30 PM. The event is held at the Dog Haus Biergarten in Old Town Pasadena, a lively venue with an outdoor patio that provides the perfect setting for a night of cosmic exploration. Best of all, it’s completely free and open to everyone—no reservations required (although, I’d suggest getting there early to grab a table because it gets quite packed).

Each event features two 15-minute talks by researchers in astronomy, physics, and space science, followed by an interactive Q&A session. But the fun doesn’t stop there! In between the talks, attendees can enjoy:

  • Guided stargazing with telescopes – Get an up-close view of celestial wonders.
  • Astro-themed pub trivia – Test your space knowledge against fellow attendees. You can compete as a team or as an individual. First, second, and third place winners get prizes too!
  • Live music from Jason Achilles and Forrest Mitchell – Because nothing pairs better with the cosmos than live music.

And if you get hungry, Dog Haus also serves up delicious food, including their signature dogs, sliders, tater tots, burgers, and more—alongside its impressive selection of craft beers and cocktails.

A Brief History of Astronomy on Tap

The concept of Astronomy on Tap (AoT) was born in New York City in 2013, founded by Meg Schwamb and Emily Rice. It all started with an event at the Way Station in Brooklyn, which was such a hit that it quickly expanded. The founders coordinated more events, including the memorable Astronomy on Deck, held in the Space Shuttle Pavilion at the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum.

Thanks to the international nature of the astronomy community, the idea spread rapidly. In 2013, AoT Columbus was launched at the Brother’s Drake Meadery & Bar, and by 2014, events were happening in multiple U.S. cities and even abroad, including Chile, Canada, and Taiwan. The enthusiasm for space science, combined with the relaxed bar setting, proved to be a winning combination that drew in audiences from all backgrounds.

Join the Fun

Come out and check out the Los Angeles chapter of Astronomy on Tap at the Dog Haus Biergarten in Old Town Pasadena. For more information, including past event recordings, visit the Caltech Astro Outreach website or the Caltech Astro YouTube page. You can also follow the Caltech Astronomy Instagram for regular updates on events.

Whether you’re an aspiring astronomer, a casual space fan, or just looking for an interesting way to spend a Monday night, Astronomy on Tap offers a unique experience to learn and have fun!
